Ton 618

Ton 618 The black biggest hole

Ton 618 is a hyperluminous, broad-absorption-line, radio-loud quasar and Lyman-alpha blob in the Canes Venatici and Coma Berenices constellations, with a predicted comoving distance of 18.2 billion light-years from Earth. It has one of the largest black holes ever discovered, with a mass of 66 billion solar masses.

Supermassive black hole

Ton 618 is a quasar that is thought to represent the active galactic nucleus at the heart of a galaxy, with a supermassive black hole feeding on highly hot gas and matter in an accretion disc as its engine. It is believed that the light from the quasar is 10.8 billion years old. The surrounding galaxy is outshined by the centre quasar's luminosity, and hence is not observable from Earth. It is one of the brightest objects in the known Universe.

Is TON 618 the biggest black hole? Ton 618 Size

The quasar TON 618 is powered by the biggest known black hole, which has a mass of 66 billion solar masses. The massive magnitude of TON 618 prompted scientists to wonder if any larger black holes exist, and if there is a limit to their size.

Is TON 618 bigger than the Milky Way?

Ton 618 is surrounded by a massive Lyman-alpha nebula with a diameter of at least 100 kiloparsecs (320,000 light-years), more than twice the size of the Milky Way.
